Bridgewater State Falls to Trinity in First Round of NCAA Tournament

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Senior Sarah Remes (Silver Springs, MD) scored four goals to lead the No. 8-ranked Trinity College Bantams to a 19-3 win over the Bridgewater State College Bears in the opening round of the NCAA Div. III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament this afternoon on Robin Sheppard Field. 

Trinity improves to 14-3 on the season, establishing a new program record for wins, while Bridgewater State ends their season with a 15-5 mark.  Trinity advances to the second round of the NCAA Championship Tournament for the second time in four years. 

Trinity jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 7:20 before Bridgewater first-year Michelle Navoni (Mansfield, MA) found the back of the net to put the Bears on the board.  The Bantams answered with a 9-0 run, highlighted by three goals from Remes, giving Trinity a 13-1 lead at the midpoint.

Junior Caitlin Irvine (Westwood, MA) scored three goals for the Bantams and classmate Alisen Urquhart (Redding, CT) had a standout game, collecting a goal, three assists, three draw controls, and two ground balls. Junior Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, NH), who had missed five games due to injury, returned to score two goals in limited second half action, joining sophomore Liz Bruno (Andover, MA) and senior Kristen Phelps (Sudbury, MA), as multi-goal scorers in the match.  Bruno also caused three turnovers.

Trinity sophomore Stephanie Fisher (Brunswick, ME) earned the win, improving to a perfect 6-0 on the season, combining for three saves with first-year goaltender Olivia Whitney (Danvers, MA).

Bridgewater senior goalkeeper Meghan Griffin (Billerica, MA) made nine saves for the Bears as she eclipsed BSC's single-season saves record.  Griffin ends the 2010 campaign with 194 saves, two more than Karen Rapchuck's previous school mark of 192 set in 1986.    

Trinity will travel to Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania on Sat. May 15 for a 2:30 p.m. match against No.-7 ranked Stevens Tech.   The Bantams, playing in their sixth NCAA National Tournament, lost to Babson in 2008, and defeated Endicott College

Bridgewater State to Open NCAA Tournament Play at Trinity

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College Bears will travel to Hartford, Connecticut to take on Trinity College on Wednesday, May 12th in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

The tournament pairing were announced on Sunday evening as there will be a field of 28 teams competing for the national championship. There will be 12 first round matchups with four teams earning opening round byes.

The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to the regionals at Gettysburg College on May 15th and 16th to take on either Stevens Institute of Technology or Montclair State University.

Under the guidance of fifth-year head coach, Erika Smith (57-29, .663), Bridgewater State (15-4) earned a trip to the NCAAs by virtue of winning the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) Tournament title with a 21-9 championship game victory over Castleton State on Saturday. The NCAA berth is BSC's second all-time and first since 2003.

Trinity (13-3) was an at large or pool c selection as the Bantams lost in the semifinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament to eventual champion Williams College. Trinity, who was the NESCAC regular season champion, is heading to the NCAAs for the third time in the last four years under the direction of fourth-year head coach, Kathryn Livesay (46-19, .708).

Bridgewater is led by senior midfielder and NEWLA Offensive Player of the Year, Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA). Manning currently has 63 goals and 57 assists on the season for 120 points, as well as 76 draw controls. She has already set the BSC single-season marks for points and assists.

Junior attack Jenny Jones (Framingham, MA) scored a school-record 79 goals for the Bears this season and was named to the All-NEWLA First Team. Junior defender Erin Quimby (Chelmsford, MA) anchors the Bears defensive unit as she was selected as the NEWLA Defensive Player of the Year. Quimby enters the tournament with 25 caused turnovers, 29 draws and 42 ground balls as well as eight goals and nine assists.

Senior Meghan Griffin (Billerica, MA) has been terrific in goal all season long for the Bears. Griffin has made 185 saves in 2010 and is sporting a 10.92 goals against average and a .497 save percentage. The NEWLA Goalkeeper of the Year set the BSC single-season record with her 15th win on Saturday against Castleton.

Junior attack Caitlin Irvine (Westwood, MA) has paced the Bantams offensively as she has 36 goals and ten assists for 46 points. Junior midfielder and 2009 First Team All-American Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, NJ) is second on the team in scoring (25G, 17A, 42 Pts), but has missed each of the last five games.

Sophomore Gina Dinallo (West Hartford, CT) is 8-3 in goal for Trinity with 61 saves and a 7.43 goals against average. She is also sporting a .439 save percentage.
